TOP TIPS TO FIGHT COLDS AND FLUS NATURALLY AND EFFECTIVELY

Following yesterday's Top 10 Tips to keep colds and flus away this winter, here are a few easy tips to apply of you do get sick and wish to treat yourself holistically.

1. Continue consuming as many zinc-rich foods as possible. Refer to my blog from yesterday for more details. A natural Zinc spray is a great addition. Buy the one with echinacea and elderberry to both boost your immune system further and soothe your throat
2. Discontinue the use of ALL dairy products until all mucus - even simple sniffles, has disappeared. Even traditional doctors will tell you to cut out all dairy when sick!
3. Drink lots of water… The more you drink, the more you flush out impurities and germs
4. Drink lots of miso soup with lots of sea vegetables and mushrooms. Refer to my blog from yesterday for the best kinds to get.
5. Lots of greens and fruits are great too. Leafy greens are filled with vitamin C; so are coconut water, kiwis, and citrus fruits!
6. Drink freshly squeezed lemon juice or tea. This is also a great drink to have first thing in the morning to stimulate bowel movement and help the body get rid of bacteria and impurities stuck in the colon.
7. You can add a little honey to your lemon tea if it's too bitter for you or for your stomach. Honey is great for coating your throat and soothing it. It helps reduce coughing too.
8. If you don't like honey, licorice tea or licorice juice extract are great natural products to soothe your throat.
9. If you suffer from high blood pressure, don't use licorice. instead, use slippery elm in little chewable tablet which will coat your throat instantly. You can buy them for less than $3 for about 30 tablets in any health food store and they have no added sugar.
10. Use raw Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to kill germs and break down the mucus. Drink at 3- 8 oz glasses of water with 1 teaspoon of ACV a day, before each meal. ACV is a widely recognized health tonic and has been used as a proven remedy for many common ailments, pains and aches for a very long time (Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine used it extensively to treat his patients.)
11. Remember to scrape your tongue a few times a day in order to remove the accumulation of bacteria there. See yesterday's blog for details.
12. Do 'Neti' to unclog or prevent the clogging of your nostrils. Removing bacteria and dried up mucus there will be extremely helpful. See yesterday's blog for details.
13. A great technique to help remove blockages in your nostrils is to set up a simple steam inhalation tent in your home. Using boiling water safely placed in a big salad bowl or in the original pot you used to boil it, stand or sit above the water (not too near so you don't burn your face) with a towel over your head so that you can keep the rising heat/ evaporating water in the little tent you have formed with your towel. In order to further enhance the effectiveness of steam inhalation, use aromatic herbs. Some traditional favorites are sage and eucalyptus, which can make the steam more soothing. These herbs are also antibacterial, and using aromatics in this manner can help reduce the chance of secondary bacterial infections that can follow viral respiratory conditions. You can add sage or eucalyptus to the boiling water by the whole leaf or as an essential oil - try a teaspoon of the oil, or a small handful of the leaves. Both are available at health food stores.
14. Gargle with sea salt - using about a teaspoon of natural sea salt per 8 oz of tepid water. You will find that after gargling, mucus and phlegm will naturally come up to the surface (throat) and you will feel the urge to spit it out.  Do it at least 3 times a day for about a minute at a time.
15, If your head fills like a 'big balloon' filled with water, use some cayenne pepper powder (preferably organic), either sprinkled in your food or as a 'tea'. The later is pretty harsh to take so adding it to a soup is probably a better option.
16. Act fast. If you pay attention to your body, you will notice that there are warning signals when you are about to get sick. First signs that you are getting sick include body aches and soreness, overall lethargy and the 'undeniable' itchiness at the back of your throat. If any of these signs are present, start following the tips outlined above and those from yesterday's blog.
17. And if you didn't act fast enough or if that just wasn't sufficient, use garlic and goldenseal root as natural antibiotics - a great alternative to chemical antibiotics usually prescribed that kill all the 'friendly' bacteria in our intestinal flora.
18. Rest plenty, don't exercise - especially if you have fever, try to sweat out the toxins (saunas, hot baths, wrapping yourself in layers of clothes and blankets, etc.) eat less to redirect the energy normally used for digestion to healing and you will heal much faster!
19. Once you are better, consider detoxing your body and switching to a healthier diet so you may bring your body back to an alkaline state where it will remain free of dis-ease.

Flight the Flu Season before it 's even here! Immune System booster tips to live by!

Fall is upon us and Flu Season is approaching fast… Don't let it be another year where you spend days at time in bed fighting a bad cold or flu. Here are a few simple tips to get you ready for this change of season!

1. Boost your immune system by eating lots of greens and fruits.
2. Drinking am Algae-based superfood such as E3live* will help provide you with the most complete source of natural vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy and alkaline. (go towww.thesouthbeachdetox.com for more information on E3Live)
3.Drink plenty of water to flush out all toxins from your body and keep the body healthy. Choose high quality water that are alkaline. Remember, an alkaline body (blood) cannot get sick! The best water around is most definitely Kangen.
4. Drink miso soup to which you can add a variety of great tasting, vitamin-packed sea vegetables (wakame, kombu, dulse, etc.).
5. Adding health-giving mushrooms such as shiitake, maitake, and reishi to your miso or other dishes is also a great way to keep the doctor away!
6. Zinc-rich foods such as wheat germ, sesame seeds and tahini, pumpkin and squash seeds, dried watermelon seeds, dark chocolate and cocoa butter, and peanuts are great to boost your immune system and get rid of a dawning cold before it takes over.
7. Keep away from dairy products which form mucus in the body. There are so many healthful alternatives to dairy these days that eating it just isn't worth the risks. Read The China Study if you are not yet convinced about the health risks associated with heavy consumption of dairy products.
8. Use a saline solution to cleanse your sinuses and remove dried up mucus and bacteria which accumulate in your nostrils. The yogic method known as Neti, which uses a neti pot, is most adapted and effective to attain the desired results. I will discuss Neti as part of another post.
9. Remove excess bacteria that accumulate on your tongue using a tongue scraper, or simply clean fingers. If your tongue has a thick deposit on it, then it means every time you eat you are actually swallowing back all the bacteria eliminated through your tonsils. A good indication that you need to scrape your tongue or may be sick is the color of your tongue. If it isn't pink, then it isn't healthy! I will also discuss tongue scrapping in another post.
10. Detox your body! A holistic body cleansing once or twice a year is the best thing you can do to boost your immunity and ensure that your body remains alkaline at all times… For more on ways and benefits of detoxing naturally, please visit www.thesouthbeachdetox.com

This abridged article is far from complete, but it's a good start to help you stay healthy as winter approaches!

Food & Nutrition: 'Raw food, and how to keep our skin holistically healthy through what we put into our bodies'

Food & Nutrition: 'Raw food, and how to keep our skin holistically healthy through what we put into our bodies'

There's nothing quite like juicing when it comes to supporting natural body detoxification. For more, read below for great insights from a raw and vegan chef specializing in nutrition research and counseling and get a great juice recipe full of health benefits which can be used while doing The South Beach Detox.

Lately I’ve been inspired back to juicing again after usually starting my day off with a smoothie of some kind (usually a green one). I’ve always known the benefits of juicing, but it has basically come down to a convenience factor until now. Cleaning the blender has been much easier than the juicer! Juicing can be a great way to boost your health by injecting an amazing amount of nutrients into your body that you may have otherwise not been able to sit down and gnaw on. For example, who really is going to sit down to a plate of 2 carrots, some cabbage, half a beet and an apple. You might, but you’ll be waiting a while to get through it all.
Also for ingredients such as carrots, the juice is way more beneficial than the vegetable itself, as the process of eating the carrot forces your digestion to do more work by separating the juice from the fibre and this is where most of the nutrients are lost. Drinking the juice ensures more of the nutrients are bioavailable at a cellular level. Here’s one juice recipe I’ve been enjoying quite a bit of late and the ingredients benefits:

Jammin’ Juice (Fresh Juice for Body Detoxification)

juice1.jpg

Ingredients (serves 2):
1/8 green cabbage
1/8 red cabbage
2 stalks of celery (include green leaves if available)
1/2 beetroot
1 green apple
1 carrot
1 whole lemon
1 inch ginger
Place all ingredients one at a time in your juicer. I always like to save the celery till last as the strings can end up clogging up the screen (I use a champion masticating juicer). Also try and alternate softer ingredients like cabbage leaves, with the firmer vegetables like carrots or beetroot as they will assist moving the softer veggies along. I always blend the finished product with some ice cubes briefly as I love my juice cold and it also helps to mix the foam through the juice.
Drinking your juice as close to making it is always preferable, as it begins oxidising as soon as it is made therefore diminishing the nutrient and enzyme content. However if you are short of time, you can always juice up to 3 days ahead of time, as long as you store the juice with absolutely no air in the container and glass containers are best. You can fill the juice right up to the top of a jar, cover with cling film then screw on the lid.
Also, try to drink your juice on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, and do not consume any solids for at least an hour afterwards and even try and wait until you start to get hungry. This is because your body will utilise the juice much better without the added work of digestion.
Health benefits of the ingredients
Celery
Strong diuretic. Assists arthritis and rheumatism patients. Also beneficial for liver and gall bladder health issues, and will ease constipation. Can alleviate menstrual problems in women.
Beetroot
high in calcium, phosphorus, potassium and iron which makes it beneficial for those suffering from anaemia. Can reduce blood pressure within in hour of consuming in a healthy individual and is high in Vit B.
Apple
can delay onset of dementia or Alzheimer's disease, It also helps prevent liver and kidney disease, formation of uric acid and chronic colitis. Great detoxifier.
Carrot
Even though carrots contain approximately 16% sugar, they have been proven to have less blood spiking effect than white potatoes or bread. Carrot juice is exactly what the body needs for blood alkalising (disease can only survive in an acidic body). An amazing ingredient for clear skin: prevents dry skin, treats psoriasis and other skin conditions. Other healths issues carrot juice assists with - cancer, eyesight, production and quality of breast milk in nursing mothers, high cholesterol & water retention.
Lemon
used in skin care it is a natural antiseptic and will rejuvenate the skin, and can even remove blackheads. Known as a detoxifier, lemon acts as a blood purifier and body cleanser. Will treat heartburn, throat infections, nausea, and can even rid the body of parasites. Rich source of Vit C & B.
Ginger
Blood purifier, great for regulating blood circulation, reduce nausea, useful for patients with gall stones, heartburn relief, cold and flu prevention and management, menstrual cramp relief.

Tips for Detox: 'Preparation is the key!'

Tips for Detox: 'Preparation is the key!'
Alessandrina Lerner, The South Beach Detox, December 28, 2010
If one of the key elements to capitalizing on the gains and progresses made during a detox is the transition phase into a healthier diet and lifestyle, equally important is the preparation phase.  How you prepare yourself for a detox will greatly determine how easy, carefree and enjoyable of an experience it is for you. While not everybody has an emotional attachment to food, most often than not people in western societies have developed a strong - and often unhealthy, relationship to food, and most specifically to what is referred as 'comfort' food.  Intelligent nutrition-based detoxes such as The South Beach Detox allow you to gently break this attachment -  and the vicious cycle that comes with it, without depriving your body of the nutrition it needs at the cellular level and while still resting your digestive system.  Following are a few tips to make to ease into your Detox and make this memorable for you in every good sense of the way.

1. Food Intake:
  • Start reducing your food intake in the week prior to the detox. Cutting back on 10% of your daily volume each day is easily manageable and makes a big difference over the course of 5-7 days. If you can start that early, cut your volumes back in the 3 days prior to starting your detox.  Taking this step will make it a lot easier to shift from a solid food diet to a primarily liquid food diet during the detox.
  • Start incorporating more raw food, especially fruit and vegetables - preferably organic - into your diet in that same preparation phase.
  • Drink lots of water or other healthy liquids - such as gentle herbal teas - to help you pre-detox your bodies.  Try to make this a new habit you can take with you after the detox. Drinking lots of water helps you remove all unwanted waste material and debris which might otherwise cause blockages and dis-ease in the body.
  • Little by little, start shifting from a solid to liquid-based diet, i.e. eat more soup, smoothies, natural juices - both vegetable and fruit.
2.  Conscious Eating & Journaling:
  • (1) Exercise mindfulness when eating.  Be present with every single bite.  Chew your food very thorougly. In some traditions of healthy eating practices, one bit of food is chewed as much as 50 times! While this may sound extreme, the more you chew your food, the more easily digestible it will become for your body to absorb all the necessary nutrients it needs to thrive; so just do your best to chew your food as much as possible without it becoming 'neurotic'.
  • Feed your body what it needs. You may not know what that is, but The South Beach Detox package can help you with that. You can also talk to a nutritionist or macrobiotician who will point you in the right direction  for establishing new healthy eating habits.
  • Try to be aware of the times you may be eating for emotional reasons. When you do, simply be aware of the reasons why it is happening. If you are unsure as to why you are eating in this manner, connect with your deepest feelings and emotions and what you are looking to fill - and not feel, through the use of food.  Be extremely compassionate and non-judgmental towards yourself through this process. Continue using detached awareness of your eating habits and eventually in time as you identify the root cause for this 'unconscious' eating and cater to your real needs, they will dissolve.
  • Start using a journal to write down what you eat, when you eat, why you eat and how you feel after you eat. This will greatly help you identify ingrained patterns and 'addictive'-type behaviors and empower you - through non-judgmental awareness, to change them by addressing the root causes for any emotional eating at the source.
  • Making a connection between the foods that you eat and how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally is also extremely important. Start investigating into this relationship so that you can then make a 'conscious' choice every time you take a bite.
3.  Exercise Regimen:
  • If you never exercise, start slowly and gradually incorporating some level of exercise to your daily life.  Whether that be gentle Yoga to start with, walking, swimming, or anything else that both feels good and is useful in keeping you healthy
  • If you already have an established exercise routine, keep it up and try to exercise for an hour a day. Make sure that it is a well-rounded practice that exercises your whole body and that not only benefits your muscles and the external, most superficial parts of your body but also your internal organs and other bodily systems. The best form of exercise to achieve this is Yoga.
4.  The Power of Intention:
  • If you are not familiar with what 'the power of intention' is and how you can use that in your life to manifest the changes you want to see, then spend some time researching the subject matter so you can truly understand how it works and how to make it work for you
  • Once you've done that, scan your life for any changes or areas of improvement. If you are unsure whether you need to change anything or not, ask yourself this simple question: "Am I really happy?".  If the answer is yes, change nothing! If it's no or not a definite yes, then simply try to identify at a high level or more deeply if you are able what is the source of your unhappiness and need to change.
  • Finally, set an intention/ clear objectives for your detox that will support the changes you want to see happening in your life... Yes, it's that easy!
5.  Mind De- and Re-conditioning:
  • Spend some time reflecting on the fact that the way you think and behave is only the result of past conditioning and therefore can be change through re-conditioning.  While this may sound like trading one for another, this is the closest we can get to freedom as human beings.  Being conditioned to enjoy life and not react to it in negative patterns is freeing in itself and that's what you will learn with The South Beach Detox. The key thing to remember is that you are not your mind, and that's a great thing!
  • One of the most effective methods of cleansing your mind and reprogramming it is going to the source, i.e. using sound vibrations - such as powerfully charged words, i.e. mantras - to transform the content of both body and mind
  • In line with this principle, select a mantra from any mantras you will have received in your South Beach Detox package or do some research and find a mantra that resonates with you and supports your intention and the detox objectives you've set for yourself
  • The best mantras to use during a detox are usually 'healing' mantras.  These will heal body and mind and prepare your body to receive the maximum benefits from the detox. They will also make you highly receptive to change and higher vibrations, making your meditations much more effective and powerful.
  • In selecting your mantra, you can select 2 routes. You can either follow your intuition; i.e. try a few mantras, repeat them a few times and select the one that resonates with you most.  Or you can take the intellectual approach and select the mantra of your choice based on its 'worldly' meaning/ translation - though that is often a less effective approach since charged words and sound vibrations can only be equated to the direct experience they deliver, and that can never be translated into word.
6.  Breath Awareness and Breathing Technique:
  • With something as simple as breathing, you would think there was no room for error.  However, because breathing is an automatic process rather than a learned one, we often do not do it properly. Learning to breathe optimally to feed both mind and body and bring them to a state of balance is one of the essential tools you will learn during The South Beach Detox. You will also use various breathing techniques to induce deep states of relaxation that will not only enable you to process all the changes occurring during the detox with ease and detachment, mitigate any stress you may be feeling in regards to breaking old patterns, but also to access deepest states of consciousness during your meditations.
  • Following is a simple technique you can start using to prepare yourself for more advanced breathing practices you'll use during the detox. For a day or two, be aware of your breathing pattern and simply observe your breath, with complete detachment and non-judgment. Observe how your breath, mental state and emotions are connected. When stressed and taking short breaths, consciously start to lengthen your breath and see how that immediately calms your mind and gives you a sense of peace and plenitude.
  • After the first period of observation (1-2 days), move onto a more involved yet extremely easy and relaxing breathing technique. The method is very simple. Inhalation and exhalation are slow and deep and of equal duration, with no effort or strain.  At the end of the exhalation, pause for 1-2 seconds (with empty lungs). The latter helps really complete the exhalation and stop the chatter of the mind.
  • After another day or two, and as a continuation to this simple and relaxing breathing technique, start lengthening the inhalation and exhalation which remain of equal duration (so for example if you started with a count of 4, after a day or two, move to a count of 5. Again no effort, no strain. If you feel any strain at any point, discontinue the pauses and if you still feel any strain, then go back to regular breathing before you start again.)
  • The key to success with breathing techniques is time and effort to perfect it. Always make sure that you master the beginners' techniques fully before moving onto other more advanced techniques.

All Detox Programs operate under the principle that when we eat less, our digestive organs require less energy and thus a large amount of energy is liberated for use in more important directions, like cleansing and healing.  Different detox program yield different results depending on the extensiveness and effectiveness of their coverage.  The South Beach Detox is unique amongst other detox programs for several reasons.  First of all, The Sobe Detox utilizes a proprietary three pronged approach that creates a specific positive
feedback cycle virtually guaranteeing success and transformation.  Intelligent, Complete Nutrition, Exercise and Yoga, and use of Meditation and Awareness are the three components that feed on each other to create a snowball effect of positive transformation that can be experienced on every level of your being.  Most importantly you will learn how easy these skills are to perpetuate in your life after the detox.  Success in a detox can be measured by the feeling of contentment and well being you feel during and after you've completed the detox! You will enjoy the process of learning new things and feeling more peaceful everyday and experience this entire program as a blessing and a true opportunity to realize your intention.

The need to detox: The South Beach Detox launches a local detox program in London, UK

The South Beach Detox launches a local detox program in London, UK
Press Release, Friday, March 12, 2010
After a successful launch in the US, The South Beach Detox will be offering a local detox program in London, UK.
The intention behind The South Beach Detox program is to help people implement significant positive changes in their lives by employing simple but effective tools.  Through the practice of intelligent eating, proper exercise, good rest, and
awareness, you will learn to to create an environment for your body and mind to experience true well-being.  This is 4-Day Detox goes far beyond 4 days.  The South Beach Detox is in fact a training ground to teach you certain skills that can easily be employed in your daily life and that will bring tremendous results in the way of healthy, balanced and harmonious living.  Detox programs do not have to be difficult but require a certain level of effort to be successful.  The South Beach Detox was specifically designed with that in mind, i.e. to maximize the benefits, and mitigate the challenging parts, to the degree possible.  In order to gain the most out of your detox, your body has to get the deep rest that it needs and this requires a specific internal and external environment.  The South Beach Detox provides this environment with a perfect balance between exercise and rest.

Here are some general guidelines regarding detox programs to help you maximize your detox experience.

Detox programs are designed to give the body the conditions necessary for it to expel stored toxins and waste material throughout the whole body. This is accomplished through a two-fold approach consisting of reducing food intake and increasing
rest. This combination allows your body to use its vital energy in a direction other than the attempt to digest food which is the bodyʼs number one energy drain. When the body has access to this new found (not wasted) energy it uses it to clean itself.  That's exactly what the detox is.  You may find yourself feeling much more energized than usual during this time - especially after the second day, but donʼt drain yourself in Yoga practice during this time. Spend more time resting in childʼs pose during your sequence and go into relaxation pose sooner if you feel the need to.  Listen to your body, the primary intention during The South Beach Detox is to conserve energy so the body can use it for cleansing itself.  Throughout these four days please take as many naps as possible and avoid any unnecessary social engagements or demands on your time and attention. This special time of detox is just for YOU!  So enjoy our organic nutritious energy drinks, detox yoga sequence, the guided meditations specifically designed to let you go within and support your detox, and the time for yourself.  We make ourselves fully available to you during this period of change and transformation.  Living free of patterns and habits is very liberating, so enjoy taking this opportunity to give your body and mind a deep cleanse.

Tips for Detox: Detox Your Body With Yoga

'Yoga to Detox Your Body: Deep Body Cleansing Yoga Exercise'
Extract from Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga is a powerful tool for cleansing both body and mind. The Kundalini Yoga exercise described below is excellent for cleansing your body of toxins and helps you to detoxify your entire system.  It can be added at the end of any Kriya - a cleansing technique - and should be done prior to the final relaxation period. This pose is officially a part of Kundalini Yoga Warrior Kriya, which is an advanced kriya that I will publish in the future, and it uses a powerful breathing technique to help purge and cleanse the system.  As with all yoga techniques, don’t overdo this exercise and build up your capacity slowly. This particular exercise will be part of the following 3 free e-books here on Mastery of Meditation, as it is a Hatha Yoga pose, a Kundalini Yoga exercise as well as a yoga breathing technique: Free Hatha Yoga Poses, Online Kundalini Yoga Exercises & Free Yoga Breathing Exercises E-book. One last thought before I jump into the details of this terrific pose.  I was once attending a yoga camp in upstate NY, where a Hatha Yoga teacher was teaching the class.  She asked us to do this pose and afterwards commented that she could immediately tell the Kundalini Yoga students apart from the rest, because they are absolutely not shy and seem to have no social inhibitions when asked to do yoga exercises that are a odd, weird, crazy or even downright embarrassing. I tell my students exactly that when I ask them to do any technique which is strange or embarrassing.  I remind them they are Kundalini Yoga students and Kundalini Yogis are fearless and have no inhibitions.  We do whatever is necessary to make spiritual progress.  So remember this if you feel uncomfortable doing the exercise below.  It is cleansing your system of garbage and toxins, don’t worry about how it looks, don’t hold back, just go for it! If you are not a Kundalini Yogi, feel free to add this exercise at the end of your yoga session or exercise routine to help cleanse your body of released toxins.

Yoga Exercise to Cleanse & Detox the Body:
a. Instructions for practicing Detoxifying 'Panting Dog Breath of Fire':
  • Yes the pose is called 'Panting Dog Breath of Fire'!
  • As illustrated above, sit up on your heels in Rock pose (also called Hero Pose), except lean forward slightly.  Rest your hands on your knees as shown.
  • Open your mouth wide and stick your tongue out as far as it will go.  Now begin to pant like a dog.  Remember what I said above and don’t hold back.  You are a Kundalini Yogi, just stick your tongue out and pant like a dog.  All the breathing should be taking place through the mouth.
  • Emphasize the exhalation, and with every exhalation your stomach should be contracting in towards your spine sharply (similar to Kapalbhati Yoga Pranayama in this way).  The pace should be fast, just like a tired dog panting.
  • If you feel a metallic taste emerging on the back of your tongue, this is toxic heavy metals being release and cleansed from deep within your tissue, keep going!
b. Duration for Detoxifying 'Panting Dog Breath of Fire':
  • 1 - 5 minutes.  If 1 minute is too much you can start with 15 seconds and build up from there as well.
c. Benefits of Detoxifying 'Panting Dog Breath of Fire':
  • Detoxifies and cleanses your system of garbage, toxins and heavy metals.
  • Strengthens and tones your abdominal muscles.
  • Builds your respiratory capacity.
  • Promotes good health and longevity.
d. Practice Tips for Detoxifying 'Panting Dog Breath of Fire':
  • Like I mentioned above, you can add this exercise at the end of any Kundalini Yoga Kriya.  It helps your system purge itself of any toxins that have been released into the blood stream as a result of the Kriya.
  • After doing this cleansing exercise, I also recommend drinking plenty of water once your yoga session is completed, to further help wash out any released toxins.
  • Given the amount of pollution in our air and water, we can’t afford not to incorporate 'Panting Dog Breath of Fire' into our routine from time to time.  It really will help cleanse and detoxify your entire system.

Tips for Detox: How To Detox With A Vegan Diet

It is actually easier than you think to rid your body of the accumulation of toxins and other metabolic debris and waste products.  One thing you must do detox your body is pay careful attention to the food you are eating.  A vegan diet could be one part of a detox process and it is certainly not the only way that we accumulate toxins in our body.   Think, for example, about the many situations you are in each and every day.  Your environment has many avenues that create a toxic load or stressor to your body.  From the air you are breathing, the food you are eating, the medicines you may be taking, drinking, smoking and level of exercise are all factors that go into determining how your body is able to detox.
Let’s take one of those factors above:  exercise.  Detox exercises are just as much a part of a detox program as is diet or any other type of factor.  You cannot simply do one thing and expect to have your body fully cleansed or nourished.  Just like you can’t just take a supplement and expect all the detox magic to happen without any dietary or mental changes.  Yes, you see, even your thinking can cloud your body and has toxic effects all its own.
detox_your_body_vegan_salad-200x300.jpg
A vegan diet includes grains and protein from sources like quinoa and beans.
There are many different types of diets to consider also with this whole detox process.  The main thing that you should understand is that many different types of diets work and it is up to you to determine which particular one you would like to follow.  The biggest factor is to pick one that you think you will or can follow.  The best detox diet in the world will never work for you if you keep eating French fries and drinking diet soda.
So, it is clear that committing to your program is the key.  Just like any worthwhile endeavor in life, if you want to see results you must keep dedicated to your pursuit.  There is no detox inheritance waiting for you, you’ll have to do some work yourself.  Some people go full speed ahead and see the amazing changes in their energy, mental clarity, emotional well-being and physical body quite rapidly.  It is no surprise, right?
One way you might choose to go with your diet is either with raw foods or vegan.  They are similar in many respects because under the broad category of raw food would come vegan.  But, not all vegan foods are raw.  Raw foodists are often quite purists in their dietary ideals and you should know that it is very different than your traditional diet.  If you don’t think you have the dedication required to eat a purely raw diet but still want to reap the benefits of this type of plan, you might consider a vegan diet.
Vegan refers to the fact that you will be eating no animal products of any kind.  There are many celebrities that have adopted a vegan diet, Alicia Silverstone comes to mind.  So, like with many body detox plans, the notion of eliminating meat from your diet is widely held to be a good idea.  It is also recommended to eliminate alcohol and any type of drugs (medically required are an exception) from your diet during your detox process.  A vegan diet also contains no animal products like milk, cheese, eggs, etc.  So, if an animal is needed in any way to produce the food item in question, then it isn’t vegan.  This is also a rigorous program, but not quite as much as the raw food plan.  Eating vegan can still allow you to cook food items and use sauces and things.  Most raw food diets are hard for many because of the restrictions regarding food temperatures and any sauces and things that are wanting to be used.  There are many raw food recipes and meals that are delicious.  They are not just based on eating vegetables pulled from the ground, washed and eaten.  In fact, there are several raw food restaurants and marketplaces that cater to this specific group of people.

Tips for Detox: What Should You Know About How To Detox Your Body

There is a mostly quiet but getting louder group of individuals who are big proponents of eating raw.  This mostly sounds like what it says, but maybe a little clarification will help.  Raw foodists believe that there are specific enzymes, vitamins and other nutrient rich content in our foods that are simply lost or destroyed when cooked.  There is some evidence that supports these claims.  Also, to be sure, foods that are rich in these ingredients and fiber will go a long way towards helping you cleanse your colon and assist you in your body detox.  To be clear, raw food pertains to vegetables and fruits, grains, and other non-animal products.  A purist raw foodie will be vegetarian and many will be vegan.

detox_your_body_raw_lasagna.jpg
Raw foods are not only limited to salads.
Vegan refers a diet that is free from all animal products.  Many of the foods that we have available in the U.S. have animal by-products or are actual animal products themselves.  For example, no vegan would eat an obvious meat choice like chicken or pork.  Likewise, they will not eat eggs or fish either.  For that matter, strict vegans do not eat cheese, milk, or any other product that requires an animal to produce directly or indirectly.  Gelatin, for example is an animal by-product and is found in certain mints and other desert items.  A vegan would not eat these items.  This type of diet is definitely hard to maintain in our culture of fast and convenient.  However, it is also this pace of life and diet that is leading to say much of the accumulation of toxins in our bodies.  So, a good place to learn how to detox might just be in a vegan’s home.
So, vegans and raw food purists have a lot in common.  For a moment, let’s discuss the specific benefits of eating raw foods as part of your detox diet.  There can be a lot to manage when you first get into detoxing your body programs.  You can make your life much simpler by picking some type of process and just sticking with it.  Now, for most raw foodists, this is not some fad or temporary diet.  They eat this way for all food at each meal.  You may find that this approach speaks to you as well.  First, begin your detox process by eating organic raw fruits and vegetables.  Not only will they provide much needed vitamins and nutrients, but the added fiber will help clean your colon.  Additionally, if you supplement with certain herbs or other health products, make sure you are going with the organic remedies – again, same reason as eating raw.  Drinking pure water in very adequate amounts is also a critical aspect to your detox.
Specifically, when you are eating raw foods, you will be getting the most active and alive aspects of the foods into your system.  With a lifetime of toxic accumulation, this is one of the best things you can do.  Your colon and other body tissues are constantly interacting with other microorganisms and such to keep you healthy.  When the accumulation of toxins and waste products builds up to a critical level, your body vitality and function will suffer.  The cells and tissues of your body will not be getting the ideal nourishment even from the foods you put into your body.  Once you are cleansed, then you can begin to rebuild your intestinal health and vibrant well-being again.

Tips for Detox: What Should You Know About How To Detox Your Body

Detox Your Body The Safe Way
If you are embarking on your first detox diet or program, then you need to know how to do it safely.  Most detoxification procedures that have any merit should give you the adequate information to make your diet one of the largest components of your plan.  While it can be very helpful to supplement your food choices with the right herbs, teas and detox supplements, the key will be in the organic food you eat and the amount of water you drink.
As just mentioned, you should pay particular attention to make sure that your foods are organic.  To the degree that you are trying to eliminate toxins from your body, your choices in food items will make a big impact.  Choosing organic vegetables and fruits is no longer difficult and often very similarly priced.  On the more exotic foods, you may find organic to be a bit pricey, but remember, this is your health you are dealing with.  It just makes sense to go for the cleaner produce – especially when you are hoping to detox your body.
When It Comes To A Cleanse, How Much Should You Drink?
Let’s be clear.  The only thing you should be drinking is water, possible a little fruit juice or what ever type of detox

You can blend up your own smoothies and vegetable drinks.
products you may be using.  Other than this, you should not be consuming any alcohol, pop or soda, or coffee.  While this may be hard on your normal routine, it will benefit your colon in the end.  What you are assisting is your natural body detoxification process.  Water is an essential component to cellular and organ function and health.  Your colon cleansing will be accomplished by the movement of waste through your body.  Water and some light fruit juice combined with the proper foods and supplementation will accomplish this.  The idea is to work with your body in its own natural detox way, don’t try to force something that is not a natural process.  However, you can assist and amplify the results through proper conscious dietary choices.  It’s always funny when I hear critics say “do detox diets really work?”.  They usually have never done one and consider things fast food and smoking or alcohol simple necessities of life.  Don’t get me wrong, enjoying alcohol or a hamburger time to time are fine in moderation.  I do not think anyone can defend smoking in this day and age.
Here is a basic rule of thumb to use for how much water you should be drinking:  divide your body weight in half and drink that much water in ounces, plus one glass.  For example, if you weigh 130 pounds, that would be 65 ounces of water.  There are approximately 8-10 ounces of water in a normal glass.  So, this would be approximately 8 glasses, PLUS one equals 9 glasses of water each day.  You cannot really screw this up, the key is simply to be drinking a very healthy amount each day of your detox.  The same rule could apply if you are simply trying to do a thorough colon cleansing, although the process is quite similar for both.

Tips for Detox: What Is The Difference Between A Drug Detox And A Body Detox?

What Is The Difference Between A Drug Detox And A Body Detox?

detox_your_body_drug_detox-150x150.jpg
A drug detox is a specific process for decreasing the body's dependence on drugs from an addiction.
One of the main differences is that with a drug detox you are trying to get clean from some very addictive substances.  These drugs have wreaked havoc with not only your body but your brain and mind as well.  Going through the detox process from prescription or recreational drugs is no picnic.  In fact, it can be very scary and cause a lot of stress in the person’s life.  This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t do it.  It can be one of the most important types of detoxifications around.
However, the information you are reading here and on the rest of this site is more related to how to detox your colon and cells for purposes of becoming healthier and cleaner.  People struggle with low energy levels or are carrying extra weight and feeling sluggish.   These are the main types of people that we can help.  Also, if you are addicted to drugs of any kind, you need to work with a professional in that area as well as a mental health provider.  When we say “detox your body” here, we are talking about from the normal toxins that exist from our environment in our daily lives.  Included in these are things like:  pesticides (on the foods we eat), air pollution, drugs (prescribed or recreational), smoking and other accumulated types of toxins.  An effective cleanse can help eliminate a lot of this type of toxic stress on your cellular physiology.  They simply need to be done occasionally as we continue to live in such environments in this age.
As a closing point, remember that when you see “how to detox” on this site, we are speaking to the more specific notion of cleansing rather than drug detoxification.  It is worthy to note, however, that as you participate in a cleansing diet with adequate hydration and proper vegetables and fruit, that it will assist you in eliminating other toxic substances from your body – not the least of which can be contributed to by drugs.  Best of luck!

Tips for Detox: Do Detox Diets Really Work?

Like in life, the more willing you are to ask for help, the more likely you are to have people show up that can assist you.  So, if you’re trying to learn how to detox safely and effectively, using the proper supplements or fruits and vegetables, then you’ll be ready if you do enough research.  That’s because there are many online resources to teach you about this topic.  Short of a “detox your body” manual, we hope this site will help you get some answers to your questions.  When you’re pondering a difficult topic like how to clean out your body from years of toxic build up, you should do some due diligence.  Once you’re comfortable with having filled your mind with the proper ways of embarking on your detox program, you will be more properly prepared mentally to proceed.  So, how does one detox with ease as this article’s title suggests?  Well, you have to start with the basics.  The basics start with defining what would qualify as a detox diet and what is just eating a big salad every day.
Don’t Confuse Fasting With Detoxing
detox_your_body_fasting.jpg
Fasting has been a part of not only many diets but spiritual traditions as well.
This is a common problem or distinction that needs to be made.  And the distinction is quite a simple one, just important.  Fasting implies that no food is being consumed as part of the detoxification.  This is not what this is about as a way to detox your body.  We offer advice and info about how to detox using proper organic foods, supplementation with teas or even doing an herbal detox which involves specific plants and herbs to help you clean out your system.  With the right dietary choices, you can do a proper detox without fasting.  Sometimes, a fast is recommended for a person who has a tremendous amount of ambition, or weight to lose and has less information.  Often times, a fast is not the best way to lose weight or detox your body.  The best way can vary person to person, but usually includes hydration as a key component.  So, fasting can be part of a detox, but it may include supplements and any number of a variety of drinks or teas.  So, in this sense, it isn’t like you are eating and drinking nothing in order to lose weight or otherwise detox the body.
Detox Your Body One Choice At A Time
Basically, as you learn how to detox, you will be faced with many challenges emotionally as well as physically.  It isn’t strictly your body that will be going through this cleanse.  Your mind will be going through it too.  In fact, many in the health care professions use the term body-mind now, to indicate how there really is no separation. In any case, a body detoxification process is both a challenge and opportunity for you to pay attention to other ways in which you live your life.  The toxins you are trying to eliminate from your body got there somehow.  What types of choices do you (or did you) make that got you to this point in the first place?  Part of learning how to detox your body is that many of these old behaviors and patterns will show up again and again for you to address in your life.  The more completely you address them, the more beneficial each future cleansing process will be for you.

Tips for Detox: So, You're Thinking About A Body Detox Are You?

Detox Your Body Without The Yo-Yo Effect
detox_your_body_yoyo_diet.jpg
It is a very common phenomenon. You can avoid it by choosing to eat a more vegetable based diet as a routine.
That previously mentioned flaw to diets, the snap-back effect – it’s a common problem for many people not only trying to lose weight but even those learning how to detox.  You’ve probably experienced it yourself if you are looking to lose weight with your detox.  The smart way to detox your body is to go about it like any pursuit that is worthwhile, commit to it.  Some detox diets are only for a brief 2-3 day period.  We’d call this more of a quick fast or fasting cleanse, but you’ll see it as a detox in places too.  Most sources will recommend at least a 10 day time period to plan for your detox program.  This is ample time to allow your body to go through its natural process of elimination, followed by further cleansing and more elimination.  Combined with the suggested fruits, vegetables, supplementation to support your cleanse and adequate hydration and you will be in good shape.  Great shape even, in no time!  As you learn how to detox this way, you’ll be much better about your body’s ability to be more alive, vibrant and full of life.
So, rather than trying to be the hare and finish a brief episode of colon cleansing and then race on to your next diet, give yourself some time to be the turtle and ultimately win for your health.

How Much Is There To Know About Cleaning Out Your Colon?
Much is out there in the way of colon cleansing products and herbal supplements to help you get the most out of your chosen plan.  If you know specifically what products you are looking for, that makes your online search much easier.  Colon cleansing products run a wide range of goals.  Some are for general detoxification of every day toxins like pollution and from what we put into our bodies through our diet.  Others claim to detox your body from heavier and longer-term toxins like drugs, agricultural residues and even heavy metals.  The heavy metal detox programs are for metals like lead and cadmium and are typically sold as ‘chelating products’.  Chelation is the term used in the professional field that relates to the removal of heavy metals from the blood and body tissues. It is usually done through intravenous (IV) type drips and requires continued sessions to fully cleanse your body.  The problem is that these will also leach other important minerals from your body and that is why it is recommended that you only do this type of process with medical supervision.  You don’t want calcium and other substances being leached from your bones do you?  Didn’t think so.  There are suppositories that offer claims of chelation as well.  They do actually have some merit to them, you just have to get the correct ones.
Answering The “How To Detox” Question Can Be Complicated
