Preserving Your Energy and Grounding Yourself During A Time of Cleansing and Change

Preserving Your Energy and Grounding Yourself During A Time of Cleansing and Change

Preserving Your Energy and Grounding Yourself During A Time of Cleansing and Change: 'Why Use A Protective Stone During Your Detox?'

The time of detox is a very special time where your objective is to achieve deep inner peace and optimize your well-being. It is also a time when you heal yourself from physical, mental, and emotional trauma that may have been stored within your 'body' (in all its various dimensions). Because you may become extremely open, receptive, and vulnerable to outside energy during a time of detox, it's always a good idea to protect yourself against any negative energy - within yourself, from others, or even from modern apparatus that can transmit them. Hematite is a great, simple, and extremely affordable choice in order to help you achieve this objective of release and protection against energies that may negatively affect your health and well-being. The Hematite is a great stone to have not only during the time of detox but all the time so that you may protect yourself against the ongoing attacks of negative energy that often come along with fast-paced, aggressive modern lifestyles (city settings, workplace, abusive family, etc.) Please read below for more detailed information on Hematite and how to use it optimally. Consider getting a simple stone to keep by your side or a piece of jewelry made with hematite that you can wear easily for protection. Make sure that you repeatedly release the energy that may have built up in your stone through the various techniques provided below whenever you feel that it is necessary.

General Gemstone Details
Hematite is a metallic gray iron oxide mineral, and the same stone of a differing variety as specularite. Ancient Egyptians used it to stanch blood and promote the formation of blood cells. In the Middle Ages is was known as the "blood stone" due to the fact that the water used to polish it would turn red during the process, as if the stone were bleeding. Native American folklore states that war paint made from hematite will make one invincible in battle. People in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries wore hematite jewelry during mourning.
Scientists of the Mars Exploration Rover Project believe that deposits of hematite on Mars may help prove whether large amounts of liquid water ever flowed on Mars' surface. They say that where water was, life may have had a chance to thrive as well. Hematite is said to protect the wearer's vital energy and guarantee survival. Amulets of hematite have been found in nearly every pharaoh's tomb as a support in the afterlife.

Scientific Properties:
Hematite generally occurs as massive opaque material with a metallic luster, showing a blood red color when cut into thin slices. However, it can also occur as short, black rhombohedral crystals as well, and my have iridescent surfaces.
An imitation substance, hematine or hemalyke which closely resembles hematite, is made of stainless steel, chromium and nickel sulfides, these however are magnetic, while natural hematite is not. Most marcasite in today's market is facetted hematite. Actual marcasite tends to erode and dissolve from exposure to the air

Mystical Properties:
Hematite, besides it's association with the blood, has also been known to be called the stone for the mind. It brings with it grounding and calming which in turn creates mental organization and focus. It will assist in original thinking, logical thinking, and mathematics. Hematite decreases negativity and can help balance the mind - body - spirit connection, it draws negative energy away from you into itself. It's acts well as a stabilizing force. It is a good stone to have around when you are being bombarded with vibrations and energies of other crystals and stones.

Healing Properties:
Hematite is used for staunching blood as well as to stabilize the circulation of blood and combat venous hyperemia and embolism. Hematite stimulates iron absorption in the small intestine, which in turn improves oxygen supply to the body.
It can be in direct contact with the skin, but results in inflammation for some people, so test it carefully before using, and if inflammation should occur or worsen, discontinue contact immediately. Never wear a hematite near inflammations of any sort, as it can exacerbate them. Never discharge hematite in water. Placed among tumbled rock crystals hematite releases it's negative energy and at the same time becomes recharged with positive energy.

Magical Properties:
Energy: Projective Element: Fire Powers: Healing, grounding, divination. Hematite is a strange stone; heavy, solid ad silvery black. It's name alone leads to some mystery. Ancients called it Bloodstone, so references in the past are all relating to that name. Therefore magical information relating to this stone is scarce. Hematite is worn for grounding and stabilizing purposes and to focus the attention on the physical plane.

Zodiac:
Associations: Saturn Not a Traditional Birthstone for any Month
Stone of Aries and Aquarius, but is assigned to Scorpio, whom it not only protects but also warns of danger by changing temperature.

Chakra Classification:
Hematite is particularly effective on the First, or Root/Base Chakra. but will also energize the "earth star" below the feet.

Where to purchase your Hematite and other healing gemstones and crystals:
Hematite has great healing properties and is a great gemstone to use both during your detox and any other time. There are many other gemstones and crystals which can provide you with protection or support during healing. Following is a great website where you can find gemstones and crystals both in their natural form or  integrated into beautiful jewelry and decoration pieces. Miami Based Yoga & Nutrition Company launches "Virtual" Holistic Cleanse

Miami Based Yoga & Nutrition Company launches "Virtual" Holistic Cleanse
By Alessandrina Lerner, The South Beach Detox
www.thesouthbeachdetox.com
Dated: Feb 11, 2011
The rise in degenerative and stress-related ailments and diseases has health experts and people all over the world looking for permanent solutions to this epidemic.  The South Beach Detox, a Miami-based leader in health & wellness programs which offers its services worldwide is sharing its knowledge on how to remain healthy, prevent illness, and find long-lasting happiness.
Miami, FL (Feb 7, 2011) The past 2 years have seen tremendous interest and emphasis on integrating a preventative approach to healthcare.  As the first lady, Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative progresses within public schools, proper nutrition and exercise remain at the heart of its successful implementation. To attain the objectives set forth by the Obama Administration and achieve permanent changes, mentalities need to change and people must become aware of the direct relationship between their nutrition and exercise regimen and their state of health.  The South Beach Detox has made it its primary objective to support this reform and provide an affordable and non-invasive detox program that can benefit as many people as possible. Both parents and children need to be educated on the value of health and how to achieve it if sustainable changes are to take place.

The South Beach Detox has integrated yoga, breathing, mantra chanting and meditation to a line of powerful nutritional and cleansing products in order to offer the most effective and powerful holistic cleanse possible. Further, the pioneering company is now offering the detox as a 'virtual' program which can be done in the privacy of your home.  Not only has this made  The South Beach Detox very convenient for people who cannot spend 4 days in-studio but it has also cut down the cost to a third of what you would pay for it before.  In-studio and private options remain available for those clients who prefer group settings for motivation or need the support and counseling of an expert by their side throughout.

While The South Beach Detox primarily aims at achieving long-lasting health objectives and developing a more balanced and healthy lifestyle, the benefits both short-term and long-term are multi-dimensional and far-ranging. On the physical front, you'll lose weight, feel lighter, more energetic, boost your immune system in order to prevent the on-set of disease or be better equipped to rid your body of it.  Mentally, you'll be at peace and worry-free; having balanced the energy in your body and replaced old cells with new ones that have attained a perfect state of balance through optimum nutrition. Emotionally, you'll be feeling cleansed and open as you let go of the old feelings and emotions that often keep you feeling a slave to your past.  Spiritually, you'll feel more aware than ever and clear about your priorities and intention for your life.

While our modern and busy lifestyles may leave us feeling like we don't have time for a detox or simply to just relax and reflect on ourselves, it's essential that we shift our perspective, re-prioritize our life and realize the essential values of health and well-being for without them we cannot support other objectives and endeavors.

“A lot of clients come with health and weight-loss as their primary objectives, others are looking for stress-relief and peace or even a spiritual awakening.  No matter what your objectives are, The South Beach Detox affects you on all levels of your being and it will completely change the way you think about food and nutrition.', says Alessandrina Lerner, co-owner and director of The South Beach Detox.

Unlike other cleansing programs, the four-day detox offered by The South Beach Detox provides the benefits of a real fast without the nutritional deprivation and psychological consequences.  The cleansing program includes optimum nutrition through a live blue-green algae product that taste great and leaves you feeling completely satisfied and satiated.

The South Beach Detox is looking to improve the health and outlook of Miamians all across the board. By day four you'll full of energy, your skin will be glowing like never before and you'll feel a sense of ease and contentment that may have been missing thus far.  With our undivided attention and support, you'll make it through the program like a breeze and it will change your life forever.”

Ranging from just $99 for a home-based basic package up to $299 for a private package, the detox includes all the nutritional and cleansing supplies, yoga, breathing, mantra chanting, and meditation practices as well as a full-size manual and informative tracks to maximize your detox. Private options include one-on-one detox consultations with the detox expert, Fred Busch or Alessandrina Lerner. The education is priceless. Participants will learn about the benefits of cleansing and beyond. “We wouldn’t recommend it or provide it if we didn’t believe in it ourselves,” Alessandrina Lerner. “Being healthy and content is so much more than just not being ‘sick’ or 'depressed'– it’s about putting only the very best stuff into your body so you feel your best all the time.”

Food & Nutrition: 'Foods that naturally detox the body'

Food & Nutrition: 'Foods that naturally detox the body'
Health Food & Natural Medicine Author, Feb, 2011
DownloadedFile-3.jpeg

Read below to find out more about the many foods available to help naturally detox the body.  These foods are a great addition to supplement a full body cleanse, before, after, and sometimes even in the middle of it.

Foods to detox the body

As toxicity becomes a growing concern within our society so does the need for detox. With newer, stronger chemicals in the air, water, drugs, medications and foods the risk for exposure is much greater than it was in the past. Other factors such as lifestyle also lead to the risk of exposure to pollutants, irritants and toxins. Food plays a major role in the body’s ability to eliminate toxins and chemicals. The body requires essential nutrients through food, supplements or vitamins to maintain metabolic balance. However, a poor diet that consists of foods with additives, flavor enhancers, food coloring, artificial preservatives, and refined and processed foods can compromise the body’s ability to eliminate unnecessary chemicals. Fresh and organically grown foods help to cleanse and detoxify the body. Food that is rich in fiber, high in water content and full of vitamins and minerals all help to eliminate impurities. Detoxifying foods stimulate excretion of toxic chemicals and replace them with nutrients that the body needs to restore health. When you have digestive problems, constipation, a distended stomach or sluggish elimination, look at your diet and replace fast food, soda and empty calorie snacks with these detoxifying foods.

1. Water- Water naturally flushes out chemicals, toxins and impurities from the body through sweat, breathing and urination. By adding an extra quart of water to your daily water intake you can quickly cleanse your system of ingested irritants.

2. Fruit- Fresh fruit is full of water, fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins. Fruits are easily digested and are high in nutrient content. Fruits can be eaten fresh, dried, frozen or juiced. Fruits high liquid content helps to wash out toxins. The list of fruits that can be consumed include apples, pears, oranges, grapefruit, bananas, raisins, pineapple, mango, kiwi fruit, raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants, melon, sultanas, nectarines and peaches.

3. Lemon- Lemons have a wonderful detoxifying effect on the body. Adding lemon to your water can help to stimulate digestive enzymes. Also drinking hot water with lemon squeezed into it can aid in liver cleansing. Plus lemon is filled with vitamin C and antioxidants, which help to flush toxins such as free radicals from the body.

4. Leafy Green Vegetables- Eating raw vegetables is excellent for your health and can aid in detoxification, and also add a boost to detoxification through chlorophyll. Leafy green vegetables such as blue green algae, barley, wheatgrass, kale, spinach, spirulina, psyllium, cabbage, parsley, cilantro, watercress, alfalfa, chard, and arugula all contain chlorophyll, which help to rid the body of environmental toxins. Chlorophyll is a plant based compound that can flush out smog, heavy metals, herbicides, cleaning products and pesticides from the liver. These greens have a diuretic effect on the body, which causes toxins to be expelled through excretion. Leafy greens are most often used in salads, which are full of fiber and contain fewer calories, which help to flush the system of toxins.

5. Raw Vegetables- Eating raw vegetables helps to naturally cleanse the stomach, intestines and bowels. Raw vegetables also purge the liver of toxins. Vegetables are full of vitamins that are essential for health. Sulphur and glutathione are naturally occurring in many raw vegetables and help to cleanse the liver of toxic chemicals. Good detox vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, beets, radishes, onions, artichokes, seaweed, Brussels sprouts, asparagus and many more.

6. Broccoli- Broccoli is a great detoxifying vegetable as it helps to stimulate digestive enzymes, which encourages weight loss during detox. Broccoli sprouts are more effective than their full-grown counterpart however; they are rich in antioxidants, which encourages waste clearing from the body.

7. Garlic-Garlic is a great choice for any detoxification. In addition to being a blood cleanser, garlic is a natural antibiotic. It can reduce blood fat as well as lower blood pressure. Garlic stimulates cleansing of the liver and helps flush the body of toxic chemicals and impurities. Garlic can be added to food dishes or can be taken as a supplement to avoid the smell.

8. Green Tea- Green tea helps flush out toxins from the body. Green tea is full of antioxidants and boosts the metabolism. Green tea contains catechins, which speeds up liver function.

9. Seeds & Nuts- Seeds and nuts are a great way to detox the body. They are easily digested and aid and protect the liver in cleansing toxins. Seeds and nuts that are good for detoxing include flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, walnuts, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds, Siberian cedar nuts, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. Remember to eat unsalted nuts during detox, because salt can impede the detoxification process.

10. Beans- Beans are a major source of protein and fiber. Legumes are easily digestible and should be part of any detox program. Beans cleanse the stomach of residual toxins and help the body get rid of unwanted impurities. Include kidney beans, pinto beans, garbanzo, soybeans, and mung beans are all great for detoxification.

11. Omega-3 Oils- Foods rich in omega-3s are not only healthy for you but also help to detox the system. Hemp, avocado, olive oils, and flax seed oil are all food sources of omega-3s. When consumed they lubricate the walls of the stomach and intestines which allows toxins to flush out through the bodies natural elimination systems.

12. Figs & Prunes- Figs are high in fiber and contain calcium and essential nutrients for the body. One to two figs a day can help to improve elimination. Prunes help to cleanse the digestive tract. Prunes are high in fiber content but also contain a natural laxative that helps elimination and stops constipation. Prunes can be consumed as a dried fruit or as prune juice.

There's nothing quite like juicing when it comes to supporting natural body detoxification. For more, read below for great insights from a raw and vegan chef specializing in nutrition research and counseling and get a great juice recipe full of health benefits which can be used while doing The South Beach Detox.

Lately I’ve been inspired back to juicing again after usually starting my day off with a smoothie of some kind (usually a green one). I’ve always known the benefits of juicing, but it has basically come down to a convenience factor until now. Cleaning the blender has been much easier than the juicer! Juicing can be a great way to boost your health by injecting an amazing amount of nutrients into your body that you may have otherwise not been able to sit down and gnaw on. For example, who really is going to sit down to a plate of 2 carrots, some cabbage, half a beet and an apple. You might, but you’ll be waiting a while to get through it all.
Also for ingredients such as carrots, the juice is way more beneficial than the vegetable itself, as the process of eating the carrot forces your digestion to do more work by separating the juice from the fibre and this is where most of the nutrients are lost. Drinking the juice ensures more of the nutrients are bioavailable at a cellular level. Here’s one juice recipe I’ve been enjoying quite a bit of late and the ingredients benefits:

Jammin’ Juice (Fresh Juice for Body Detoxification)

juice1.jpg

Ingredients (serves 2):
1/8 green cabbage
1/8 red cabbage
2 stalks of celery (include green leaves if available)
1/2 beetroot
1 green apple
1 carrot
1 whole lemon
1 inch ginger
Place all ingredients one at a time in your juicer. I always like to save the celery till last as the strings can end up clogging up the screen (I use a champion masticating juicer). Also try and alternate softer ingredients like cabbage leaves, with the firmer vegetables like carrots or beetroot as they will assist moving the softer veggies along. I always blend the finished product with some ice cubes briefly as I love my juice cold and it also helps to mix the foam through the juice.
Drinking your juice as close to making it is always preferable, as it begins oxidising as soon as it is made therefore diminishing the nutrient and enzyme content. However if you are short of time, you can always juice up to 3 days ahead of time, as long as you store the juice with absolutely no air in the container and glass containers are best. You can fill the juice right up to the top of a jar, cover with cling film then screw on the lid.
Also, try to drink your juice on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, and do not consume any solids for at least an hour afterwards and even try and wait until you start to get hungry. This is because your body will utilise the juice much better without the added work of digestion.
Health benefits of the ingredients
Celery
Strong diuretic. Assists arthritis and rheumatism patients. Also beneficial for liver and gall bladder health issues, and will ease constipation. Can alleviate menstrual problems in women.
Beetroot
high in calcium, phosphorus, potassium and iron which makes it beneficial for those suffering from anaemia. Can reduce blood pressure within in hour of consuming in a healthy individual and is high in Vit B.
Apple
can delay onset of dementia or Alzheimer's disease, It also helps prevent liver and kidney disease, formation of uric acid and chronic colitis. Great detoxifier.
Carrot
Even though carrots contain approximately 16% sugar, they have been proven to have less blood spiking effect than white potatoes or bread. Carrot juice is exactly what the body needs for blood alkalising (disease can only survive in an acidic body). An amazing ingredient for clear skin: prevents dry skin, treats psoriasis and other skin conditions. Other healths issues carrot juice assists with - cancer, eyesight, production and quality of breast milk in nursing mothers, high cholesterol & water retention.
Lemon
used in skin care it is a natural antiseptic and will rejuvenate the skin, and can even remove blackheads. Known as a detoxifier, lemon acts as a blood purifier and body cleanser. Will treat heartburn, throat infections, nausea, and can even rid the body of parasites. Rich source of Vit C & B.
Ginger
Blood purifier, great for regulating blood circulation, reduce nausea, useful for patients with gall stones, heartburn relief, cold and flu prevention and management, menstrual cramp relief.

The Need For Detox: 'Why we need to maintain a balanced microflora in our intestines to remain healthy'

'Why we need to maintain a balanced microflora in our intestines to remain healthy'
BBC News - Sunday, March 14, 2010
The relationship between the health of our Micro Flora in the intestines and our overall health is clearly established in this report by the BBC.  A healthy microflora contains over 40 different species of 'good bacteria' which work together to keep us in good health.  Our modern lifestyle, which involves the consumption of alcohol, antibiotics and prescription drugs, tends to deplete the friendly bacteria in our microflora and that's why we need to take probiotics in order to replenish them.. Probiotics is the name of the healthy bacteria that we need to keep healthy.   Detox programs that include high quality probiotics help fully replenish the 'friendly' bacteria we need to remain in vibrant health.

Scientists say that, 'the human intestines hold microbes containing millions of genes'.  In fact, there are more genes in the intestinal flora than in the rest of the body.  So many that they are being dubbed our 'second genome'.
A study published in the journal 'Nature', carried out to better understand how the intestinal flora is affected by disease, details the analysis of those genes.  'Basically, we are a walking bacterial colony', said Professor Jeroen Raes, one of the
researchers involved.  'There is a huge diversity.  We have about 100 times more microbial genes than human genes in the body.  We also have 10 times more bacterial cells in our body than human cells', he told BBC News.  Most of the microbes present in our bodies live in the intestines..  The study was led by Professor Jun Wang from the Beijing Genomics Institute-Shenzhen.  Scientists from Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, France and the UK also took part in the international effort, named the European MetaHIT consortium, which has been co-ordinated by Dr Stanislav Dusko Ehrlich.  'Everyone was so motivated', said Dr Dusko Ehrlich.  'To have such an exciting project to run - it's a piece of cake. The work went much faster than we expected.'  Professor Raes, who works at Vrike Universiteit Brussel, explained why the microbes warranted such an intensive study: 'Gut flora is crucial for our health. We're basically living in symbiosis with these microbes.
He added, 'The bacteria help digest food, provide vitamins, protect us from invading pathogens.  If there's a disturbance, people get all sorts of diseases such as Crohn's disease, Ulcerative colitis, and a link has also been made to obesity.'

The Need For Detox: 'Detox for a Sexier You'

'Detox for a Sexier You'
Seattle Balanced Body, by Katherine Branigan, NTP, MSA
There is nothing sexy about bad breath, body odor and skin issues.  Detoxing is the way we can eliminate these.  It  cleans our bodies from the inside out.  It is also the way the body heals itself - an internal cleansing process that takes place continuously. Detoxification is the process of cleaning, nourishing, and resting the body.  That means more energy for play. Detoxification is not a new science. Purification processes have been around for thousands of years.  Techniques to enhance cleansing include fasting, special foods/diet, herbs, water, rest, meditation, exercise, and a variety of bodywork techniques.  Detoxification occurs on many levels.  Physically this process assists the body in clearing congestion, illnesses, and disease potential, while improving energy.
Emotionally, detoxification processes help uncover feelings, especially hidden frustrations, anger, resentments or fear, each which can cause illness.  While spiritually cleansing, many people experience new clarity and/or an increased awareness about their purpose in life.
Sometimes we want to both physically and emotionally runaway from life.  At this point most of us need to start with a physical detox, although emotional and spiritual are important components.  It is easier to identify the physical needs and stresses of the body. These stresses affect our ability to handle emotional stress and spiritual growth.  It can seem overwhelming, especially when the boss is on the rampage or even worse multiple co-workers or employees.  The body creates toxins when it is stressed or in polluted environments, like cities.  Are you tired of hearing all the problems with today’s life?  Well the truth is, your body produces toxins no matter what.  They can be from even the healthiest food we eat or cleanest air we breathe.  It is just a part of the way our body
functions.  A healthy body can do a pretty good job of cleaning itself up.  It has done so for centuries.  The problem is two fold.  First most of us aren’t all that healthy and secondly we have so much exposure to unnatural toxins from man made comforts that we overwhelm our bodies.

So what can we do?  Focusing on a specific area of clean up is easier than attacking the whole thing at once.  I am sure there are areas in your environment that you can clean up; but, let’s focus on what we put in our body’s.  There are chemicals and additives in the food we eat.  The water supply is not the cleanest yet water comprises 60 % of our total body.  Drinking clean water equivalent to at least half our body weight in ounces will do a lot to help with detoxification as well as helping cut down on hunger.  It is common to mistake the need for water, as hunger.  Eating when we truly need water causes many health concerns, including aging.  A part of aging and toxicity is the body not digesting the food we eat and that creates more toxins and speeds aging.  So how do we slow down this aging and toxicity process?

Let me briefly describe how the body cleans itself up so you can understand the importance of the next step.  The physical body cleans things up in two phases.  Phase I detoxification uses enzymes (ex. cytochrome P450) to break down toxins into intermediate, yet often more toxic, metabolites.  At this point, some simple toxins are ready for elimination, such as caffeine.  However, most toxins require a second (phase II) cycle before they are neutralized enough for elimination.  At this stage these intermediate toxins or metabolites are actually more toxic because they are so volatile.  If not eliminated from the body in a timely fashion they can cause more damage than the original toxin.  These metabolites when properly bound are ready for elimination and exit the body through the:
colon as feces, kidneys as urine, skin as sweat, lungs as carbon dioxide, cardiovascular system via blood, and lymph to be filtered.  If any of these exit paths are slowed or stopped, the body actually can become ill because these toxins are like poison to the body.  Because exercising is one way to help release toxins into the blood stream for elimination, this is why some people after exercising get a sick feeling.  As you can see drinking plenty of water to flush the body is essential for good health.  This is also why dehydration becomes such a serious toxic issue.  70% of the population is chronically dehydrated and don’t even know it.  Exercising to enhance sweating and circulation and increased water intake are two of the simplest ways to assist your body in detoxing.
Exercising three to five times a week for a minimum of 20 minutes is great.  Other things you can do are: drink less caffeine containing beverages since they are diuretic, stop or cut down on smoking and alcohol consumption and reduce junk food and sugar intake.
Improving the quality of your meals is a great beginning to the process of body detoxification.

Now let’s take detoxing to the next level.  Every one should make sure their digestion and general bodily functions are open and functioning well before doing an intense cleansing.  If the body is stressed with the daily build up, releasing trapped toxins could make things worse if the elimination channels are not open.  So if you do not have daily bowel movements, take care of that first.  It is a huge detoxification factor.  Only then are you ready to make serious changes in your diet and “clean out”.  Bowel movements can be
increased through fiber or herbals.  If you have a history of slow transit time, see a health care professional.  This is a serious issue that is often the precursor for many diseases and allergies.

I recommend choosing a time to start detoxing when you can rest if necessary.  Usually a Friday or weekend is a good starting time, as the first couple days can be rough both emotionally and physically depending on your toxicity level.  The best way to start your first deep cleansing is to change your diet for 3-7 days.  Don’t try to fast on your initial detox.  Start by eating only fresh vegetables, fruits and brown rice.  Eat as much as you like.  Don’t go hungry.  You can steam or sauté your veggies.  The rice can be stir fried or steamed.  Use olive oil or flax oil (up to 2 T. daily ), vegetable and Celtic sea salt, vinegar, culinary spices, naturally fermented soy sauce or tamari, for seasoning.  I don’t recommend a fruit juice fast or the famous lemonade diet for a first detox either,
as they can be very hard on the body.  If you want to use a detox protein powder to help you stabilize your energy, visit your health food store or your nutritional health professional to choose a quality product.  These powders can help you from feeling detox symptoms.  Also if you are on any medications or have other health concerns check with a health care profession to determine if there are any extenuating health concerns.

What are detox symptoms?  Possible reactions fall in three categories:  digestive reactions, such as diarrhea, allergy-type reactions, such as swelling, or rashes, or a healing crisis which is a flare up of the symptoms you are trying to fix.  These all can come on strong and then usually fade as the healing occurs.  This is phase 1 of detoxing, the release accelerated.  The phase 2 then cleans up the complex toxins.  Some common symptoms of phase 1 detox are: headache, fatigue, offensive body odor, hunger, sleep issues, bad breath, itchy skin, irritability, and increased gas.  You can see why a weekend is a good time to start.  Water, light exercise and plenty of rest are essential in supporting the body through this stage.  Taking antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E) can assist clearing toxins and help with headaches.  If your colon shuts down or slows take immediate action to relieve the bowels.  Remember these toxins you are releasing are poisonous to the body and need to be eliminated rapidly.

At this point you may be asking, “Why would I do this to myself?”  Increased energy, vitality and stamina, reduction of allergic symptoms, improved digestion, better concentration, increased sexual performance, mental clarity, sense of calm and ease, resistance to
illness, slow aging, reduction of many chronic diseases and toxicity are some of the reasons.  So how do you know when enough is enough?  The key, according Dr. Elson Haas, is to individualize your program.  Look at the whole lifestyle picture to determine what you should do and for how long.  If you are unsure start slow and progress.  Some people start simply by making sure there are 12-14 hours of fasting from dinner to breakfast.  Others start by eliminating toxic foods either permanently or for the week prior to the bigger detox.  Once in a deep detox mode, when hunger returns, cleansing is done.

When returning to your normal diet, go slow.  Eat slowly, chew your food well and avoid processed or junk food.  Lifestyle changes are essential to maintain this new cleanliness.  So use this as a time to modify things.  It is better to detox slowly and as a lifestyle rather than hitting the body hard a couple times a year.  If you want to lose weight permanently, detoxing with life style changes is a great place to begin.   As always check with your health care professional before making any dietary or lifestyle changes.

Tips for Detox: Detox Instructions for The SoBe Detox® Yoga Sequence

Detox Instructions for The SoBe Detox® Yoga Sequence
Extract from "The South Beach Detox" Manual
Following find specific instructions and techniques for use during yoga and meditation practice to support your detox. The use of visualization and breathing techniques during these practices will maximize the effectiveness of detox benefits.  Be sure to place special emphasis on the cleansing process occurring at the level of the internal organs throughout.  For more details, refer to 'The South Beach Detox' manual.

a. General Guidelines for Detoxification
1- Set an Intention for your detox as part of your opening meditation
2 -Take your detox yoga sequence to the next level with deep, meaningful breathing for sensory withdrawal, circulation of energy and increased detoxification both on the mental and physical level.
3 - Use the power of visualization to enhance your detox yoga sequence, i.e. improving the quality and effectiveness of your breathing and intensifying the benefits of your slow, deep and long breathing.
4 - Use the healing power of charged words/ mantras (such as Om) to optimize the cleansing of both body and mind

b. Specific poses to focus on the detoxification process
Though all poses that are included in The South Beach Detox® Yoga Sequence help the process of detoxification, several poses are particularly beneficial to the detoxification process.  Detailed detox instructions and benefits for each of these poses are included in 'The South Beach Detox' manual.  During all the following poses, be sure to emphasize your use of visualization and deep breathing which used together create a powerful combination that enhances the benefits gained when holding these poses:

Hero—Often used in meditation, this pose is excellent for elimination.
Child’s Pose—Of particular value for its restorative but also eliminative qualities when held for longer periods of time.
Sun Salutations—Both Sun Salutations A & B are extremely useful for general elimination and energy flow.
Squat—Especially useful for the opening it provides on the physical level which mirrors itself on the mental level.
Lizard—Particularly useful for opening and release on the mental level of your detox
Twisting Triangle - A superior detoxifying pose.
Superhero/ Locust Series—Though not specifically detoxifying in themselves, with the right breathing and visualization, these poses have powerful detoxifying effects.
Peacock—As a "destroyer of disease", it is one of the most powerful detox poses.
Hurdler—Useful for detoxification of internal organs.
Head-to-Knee—Particularly effective for the detoxification of the kidneys and adrenal glands.
Seated Spinal Twist—As with all twist, this seated twist is very beneficial for detoxifying the whole body.
Pigeon— This pose plays a central role detox and release on the emotional level of your being.
Reclined Twist—Another easy yet extremely useful twist in the detoxification process.
Shoulder Stand—A wonderful and safe inversion (even for beginners) that helps the detoxification process by regulating the endocrine system.
Fish—Another "destroyer of disease" providing superior detoxification to the body.
Relaxation—The most important pose of all, where the benefits of the whole detox sequence are integrated.  It is therefore essential to do—and really let go in—this pose.  This is the time for the body to receive, recharge and rejuvenate.  Detox awareness meditation can be practiced while in the relaxation pose, or in any other seated, comfortable meditative position of your choice (cross-legged or not).  Because rest is so important in the detox, it is recommended to practice the meditation lying down for ease and comfort.  For more on 'The South Beach Detox Awareness Meditation' program, refer to 'The South Beach Detox' manual.

Tips for Detox: How To Detox Your Body With Yoga

How to detox your body
Excerpts from Detox Blog
Following are various articles dedicated to detox in all its aspects.  They cover nutrition, health, exercise, and other dimensions of the detoxification process.

How yoga poses may affect your body’s natural detoxification process is simple to understand once we can come to an idea as to what is involved in the detox process itself first.  There are several processes and organ systems that your body uses to detox on a daily basis.  These systems were designed or created in your body to help you filter out what your body needs for nourishment and growth and eliminate the toxins and unnecessary waste products.
The organs and tissues that are involved in body detoxification are contained within three main systems in your body:  circulation, digestive and lymph.  As your blood flows and is pumped through your arteries and capillaries, it is constantly exchanging oxygen and other nutrients with your cells and tissues and taking back the waste by way of your veins.  This system keeps the flow of nutrient and waste in harmony within your body.  The veins then send the blood through your liver and ultimately is filtered again and the waste ends up leaving through urine or feces.  Your lymph system collects or drains the intracellular fluid where it can be dealt with by way of your immune cells and ultimately dumps into your veins for the final filtering just described.  Then, to follow with this body detox process, the digestive system then is necessary to absorb larger nutrients, electrolytes and water mainly through the colon and eliminate the rest through your bowels as feces.  You really couldn’t design a better “how to detox” program if you had to write it yourself.
How Yoga Poses Work With This Natural Detoxification Process
There are several ways in which we can assist our body in this toxin elimination process it goes through each day.  It isn’t that it doesn’t work, we just have very high demands for the modern way we live our lives.  Any assistance we

Spinal twists are great poses to assist with your body detoxification.
can provide our body with the detox process is that much better for our health and well-being.  Many types of exercise are great to assist your body with one main aspect of its natural detox mechanism which is breath.  Your lungs are a major organ responsible for a big part of the detox process.  The following are simply a few detox yoga poses that assist the major systems previously described.
First of all, consider the spinal twist.  It has many variations, consider Marichiyasana 3/Marichi’s Twist or Ardha Matsyendrasana as suitable asanas (poses/postures).  It is based upon the idea that the twisting motion, combined with full deep breaths, assists your body in gently squeezing and moving the toxins through your body – like gently squeezing and wringing out a sponge.  Photo Credits

A second pose is often referred to as a resting pose in many yoga fitness traditions.  It is called Adho Mukha Svanasana  (downward-facing dog).  This is a well-known pose by name and has many benefits.  One of the benefits as we are describing here is with circulation and lymph flow.  Also, by the nature of your position, it is also a gentle abdominal stretch and digestive aid.  Photo Credits

Finally, Viparita Karani, the pose that is easier to call legs-up-the-wall is a good one for detox purposes.  Again, by opposing gravity, the flow of circulation and lymph is enhanced.  Additionally, as you rest on your back, it soothes your nerves and allows your body to go into a parasympathetic mode rather than the daily fight or flight, stress response mode it may typically be in.  All three of these yoga poses for detox can be done in a sequence or practice that can be done daily.  The benefits of your yoga practice will also enhance your mental and emotional well-being, another important aspect to the detox process.

Tips for Detox: Detox Your Mind, Detox Your Body

If you are considering a detox, you probably have a specific reason in mind.  Maybe your goal is to lose some weight or just firm up a bit.  Some people do a detox for strictly health reasons and feel lighter and more clear mentally after they have done a colon cleanse.  Another popular reason to do a body detox is to simply remove the accumulation of toxins in one’s cells and tissues.  In other articles, we have discussed how many aspects of a detox are involved from diet to detoxing your mind.
The focus of this article is to address another component of the physical body aspect of detoxing, which is exercise.  You see, what you put into your physical body in the way of foods and drink or even medicines, pollution and commercial agricultural by-products is only one aspect of what needs to be addressed.  Sure, if you are constantly eating processed foods, soda/pop, and other refined food products then you have an obvious source of toxins entering your body.  If, on the other hand, you simply eat commercially grown fruits, vegetables and take some prescribed medication, you may not be aware that there are potential toxins accumulating in your body from that as well.  This is by no means a case for you to stop taking your medications to live on a water fast alone.  The point is that there are toxins that exist in our environment and are entering our bodies in a variety of ways.
What Type of Exercises Help With A Body Detox?
detox_your_body_exercise-199x300.jpg
Running is great exercise to help with your body detox.
The key point to be made with exercise is that any is a good thing.  It doesn’t require an expensive or exclusive gym membership or fancy machine to get the kind of exercise necessary to detox your body.  Since one of the main forms of natural body detoxification is through your sweating, this is what you’ll need to produce more of.  So, exercise that causes your heart rate to increase and your body to heat up is what is most important.  However, you can also get a lot of benefit from having your breath rate increase as well.  It is really not possible, to any large degree, to have one without the other, it just deserves mentioning.  This is because your lungs are another natural source for detoxifying your body.  Cleansing breath and breathing is becoming a lot more common language.  It involves breathing in the nose deeply and out the mouth fully.  It can sound something like wind entering your nostrils and then a “haahhhhhhh” sound as you exhale.
There is no specific how to detox exercise book or manual.  You just need to use your body feedback as a rule.  Running, cycling and other traditional forms of cardiovascular exercise could be used for detox purposes, but you don’t need to really push yourself.  In another type of exercise, like yoga, specific poses and postures are known to have detoxing benefits for your colon and internal organs.  For example, postures that involve spinal twists, downward dog and legs up the wall are great yoga poses for detoxifying your body.  With all of the forms of exercise mentioned, it is critical that you are consuming adequate amounts of water that may be much more than you are used to.
